IOWA CITY – KMRY – 1450 AM personality Bob Brooks was mistaken for a Giant Bob Brooks Bobble Head last week by a fan at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Brooks, 85, has covered Hawkeye athletics for some seven decades. He was at the arena for the Hawkeyes’ men’s basketball game versus Northwestern last week.
The University of Iowa Athletics Department has announced “Bobble Head Giveaway Nights” this season for both men’s and women’s basketball games. Coach Fran McCaffery, Coach Lisa Bluder, and players Kachine Alexander, Jarryd Cole, and Kelsey Cermak, all have their likenesses captured on bobble head dolls this season.
“We saw this giant shaking Bob Brooks head on a body with a bad suit and we thought it was a giant bobble head,” said Ralph Husted, of Muscatine. “I thought it was just part of the bobble head promotion.”
Husted said he was embarrassed when he tried to have his wife take a picture of him with what he thought was the giant bobble head doll.
“I put my arm around it and all of a sudden the shaking head said, ‘Well-l-l-l, hello-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o.’ I about crapped my pants.”
The encounter spooked Husted so he took off running up the steps between Sections DD and EE.
A Per Mar rent-a-cop, who yelled at Husted to slow down his pace of travel, said, “He got his one warning for running. Next time, he loses his season tickets.”
